Poor man's Landmaster

I think today's comic (and Slippy) speaks for itself, but despite that I will chime in.

One great aspect of video games is the tendency for them to spawn pop culture ephemera. As an eminently interactive form of entertainment, video games deeply involve the user to a degree unseen in movies or TV. Catchphrases from popular forms of these are somewhat common now, but just wait until video games achieve deeper market penetration. "Do a barrel roll"'s progeny will be repeated so many times that they'll kick "Wazaaaa"'s ass.

Water-cooler video games are not yet a common occurrence. However, with the move towards episodic content in games like Half-Life 2, or dynamic events in MMORPGs, we might see popular new game scenarios in the near future. Humor seems to be the most pervasive form of earlier water-cooler concepts... Penny-Arcade episodes, anyone? This is a major untapped market currently, but I am sure it will be soon plugged.

Look for a new comic on Monday.

Slippy is just one of those video game characters. One of those characters that just so goddamn annoying! I always felt the temptation to shoot down Slippy, despite him being on my side. If it wasn't him bragging whenever he finally shot a ship down, it was asking me to do it for him. His creepy voice didn't help things.

I also hate toads. Filthy, wart-riddled pond dwellers, those toads.

Today's comic shows the danger of random arwing attacks. This is a threat to anybody and everybody, and no measures will completely protect you. The best defense against arwing attacks is a fully equipped transforming laser tank.

As I said, this is not foolproof. Pray they don't have upgraded weapons. Don't think the standard single shot is too weak. As you see in the filmed proof, a single green shot causes quite enough destruction. Maybe it was a charged shot? I know from my N64 days charged shots were quite the destructive...

The N64 Star Fox was really the only good, true Star Fox. The original was good in essentials, but it lacked good control, it have graphics that actually interfered with gameplay. It was so choppy and polygonal, I had no idea what I was doing most of the time. Star Fox 2, the unreleased SNES game had the same flaws, and had some sort of warped way to play that involved moving freely on the map in a way that made very little sense to me. Star FoxAdventures was not even a real Starfox game, it was just some odd game that had Fox pasted into it. Star Fox Assault had some good parts, but the on-foot parts were just annoying. Star FoxCommand was an incredible disappointment. I played the beginning, and all I saw was a bunch of repetitive all-range mode battles and dumb tactical stuff. Maybe one day, the golden age of Star Fox will come again. Until then, I will live in the past with my N64.
